Summary:

Rachel book one: Rachel, a slave girl from South Carolina boarded a ship to take the family to Nova Scotia. When she arrives she find out all of the hardships that await blacks seeking freedom in a new home.
Marie-Claire book one: The story takes place in Montreal during the smallpox epidemic of 1885. Marie-Claire, who lives in a humble home with her working-class family, must struggle to persevere through the illness of her cousin Lucille and the work-related injury of her father- even to endure the death of a loved one. All the while, Marie-Claire holds out hope for the future.
Emily book one: Emily, a ten-year-old girl living in Victoria B.C. in 1896 has great interest in the Chinese immigrants who live there. One of them cooks for the family. One afternoon Emily gets lost in Chinatown and learns something about Hing's life--and her own.
Penelope book one: Penny lived in Halifax and lost her mother so she is more like a mother and less like a sister to her two younger sisters. She is late for school on Dec. 6, 1917 and the events of the day change her life forever!
